The sun had sunk below the horizon and twilight descended.
Alabama gazed through binoculars, and she activated the infrared imagery. Soldiers patrolled around the perimeter, armed with M4 rifles. Around fifty or so buildings made up the base and more than a dozen massive hangers.
One warehouse, on the northeast side of the base, dwarfed the rest. Trailers surrounded it with men in hazmat suits. She zoomed in on the roof. Twisting the lens, digital numbers appeared on either side of the inner lenses; the zoom rate and image enhancement quality. Housed on the roof facing her, steel lattice and two main transverse beams were powered by electric motors.
Alabama crouched and leaned her shoulder against a tree, grasping the backpack straps around her shoulders. Her abdomen muscles stabilized her as she balanced on one leg while using her other foot to lower a fern in front of her for a better view.
Jackson crouched next to her. "See anything?"
"A retractable roof. If I were a betting woman, I'd bet that's where the disc is being kept." She lifted her leg slowly. The fern elongated to its original position with little to no sound. With both feet planted firmly on the ground, she clipped the binoculars to her utility belt. She frowned, her focus on her view of the base. "I count thirty soldiers along the fence in front of us."
Jackson tapped the GoPro clipped to his belt. "That's quite a few. When we get inside the warehouse, I'll record what I can and exfiltrate."
She leaned more weight against the tree and pointed to the southeastern section of the base. "We move in that direction. Military vehicles parked along the gate will give us cover after we cut our way in."
"Alarms?" he asked.
"Be wary. Using our goggles, we'll be able to see L beams. They'll glow bright red and be as thick as a pencil. If you see them, those act as tripwires. But that," she said, pointing to a sensor cable attached along the middle of the fence, "is physical security."
At a fence corner, ten feet inside the boundary, a black security alarm box stood chest-high off the base of a pole. She reached into her bag and assembled her Wire Puppy, a long-slide pistol fitted with a smart system and an electro suite. Because of the pistol's special rounds, it could reroute electronic signals inside a security system. She pulled out a silencer and tightened it in place.
"Won't that alert everyone?"
"No. To them, it will still appear as though it's working." She took aim, and fired, hitting dead center. When the round hit, a purple halo formed around the box.
"Nice shot."
Winking, she grinned and said, "Why thank you."
"If the disc is here, it's not secured." Jackson motioned ahead. "The southeast corner is clear. This way."
They hiked until they reached the edge of a forest. Dozens of parked vehicles sat near the fence and beyond.
Alabama took off her backpack and set it on the ground, the night concealing them well.
She pulled a wire cutter and began cutting through the gate.
